Frequently asked questions
Flu Vaccine
Do I need a flu jab every year?
Yes. The flu virus changes from year to year, so the vaccine is updated annually. Having a flu jab every year helps protect you against the latest circulating strains.
Can I have the flu jab with other vaccines?
Yes. You can usually have the flu vaccine at the same time as other vaccinations, such as COVID-19 and shingles. Your pharmacist will advise you if this is appropriate for you.
Are there any side effects of the flu jab?
Most people experience no or only mild side effects, such as a sore arm, slight temperature or feeling a bit tired for a day or two. Serious reactions are very rare.
When can I book my flu vaccine?
Private flu vaccinations are typically available from early autumn, with free NHS flu jabs offered from the start of the NHS flu season each year. Booking early helps ensure you are protected before peak flu season.
Can I get a free NHS flu jab?
You may be eligible for a free NHS flu jab if you are at higher risk from flu, for example if you are aged 65 or over, have certain long-term conditions, are pregnant, live in a care home, care for someone else or live with someone who has a weakened immune system. Eligibility follows current NHS guidance.
