What is chickenpox?
Chickenpox is a common viral infection that causes an itchy blistering rash, usually with fever and tiredness. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
How can you catch chickenpox?
Chickenpox spreads easily through coughs, sneezes and close contact with someone who is infected, or by touching the fluid from their blisters.
Can adults get chickenpox?
Yes. Adults who have never had chickenpox or the vaccine can still catch it, and they may be at higher risk of complications.
Is there a vaccine for adults?
Yes. Adults who have not had chickenpox before can receive the vaccine to reduce their risk of infection and complications.
What is the age limit for the vaccine?
The vaccine can be given from 12 months of age. It is suitable for children and adults who have not previously had chickenpox or been vaccinated.
How much does the vaccine cost?
At Thame Pharmacy, the chickenpox vaccine costs £75 per dose, with two doses usually recommended for full protection.
Can you get chickenpox after vaccination?
Breakthrough infections can occasionally happen after vaccination, but they are usually milder and shorter than in people who have never been vaccinated.
How can I help prevent chickenpox?
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent chickenpox. Avoiding close contact with infected people also helps reduce the spread of the virus.
