RSV Vaccination

At Thame Pharmacy, we offer the Arexvy RSV vaccine to help protect adults aged 60 and over from serious RSV-related respiratory illness. RSV can lead to complications such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis, particularly in older or medically vulnerable people. A single vaccine dose provides important extra protection each RSV season.

Frequently asked questions

RSV Vaccine

What is RSV and why might I need the vaccine?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that can cause anything from mild cold-like symptoms to serious lung infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe illness, so vaccination can provide valuable extra protection.

Who can have the RSV vaccine at Thame Pharmacy?

Our RSV vaccination service is available for adults aged 60 years and over, following a suitability assessment with our pharmacist. It is particularly recommended for older adults and those with underlying health conditions that make them more vulnerable to respiratory infections.

What RSV vaccine do you use and how is it given?

We use the Arexvy RSV vaccine for older adults. It is given as a single dose, injected into the muscle of the upper arm (deltoid), during a short appointment with our vaccinating pharmacist.

How effective is the RSV vaccine?

Clinical studies have shown that the Arexvy RSV vaccine significantly reduces the risk of serious RSV-related lower respiratory tract disease in older adults. No vaccine can offer 100% protection, but being vaccinated can greatly lower your chances of severe illness and hospitalisation.

Are there side effects to the RSV vaccine?

Common side effects are usually mild and temporary, such as soreness where the injection was given, tiredness, headache or muscle aches. Your pharmacist will discuss possible side effects with you and advise what to do if you feel unwell after your vaccine.
