Frequently asked questions

Medical Cannabis

Who can access medical cannabis treatment?

Medical cannabis may be considered for patients with long-term or complex conditions where standard treatments have not given enough relief. A specialist doctor reviews your medical history to decide if it is suitable for you.

What conditions may be considered?

Examples include some chronic pain syndromes, neurological conditions, certain mental health issues such as PTSD or anxiety, gastrointestinal diseases, cancer-related symptoms and palliative care needs. Suitability is always assessed individually.

Do I need a GP referral?

You do not need a GP referral. You can complete the online referral form yourself, but the specialist clinic will still need access to your Summary Care Record or medical notes from your GP.

Is this service available on the NHS?

Most medical cannabis prescriptions in the UK are provided privately through specialist clinics. NHS funding is currently limited to a small number of very specific cases, so patients usually pay for appointments and medication themselves.

How much does it cost?

You will usually pay a reduced-fee initial consultation (around £50), any follow-up appointments, and the cost of the medicine itself. The final price depends on the product and dose prescribed, and costs are confirmed before dispensing.

How do I receive my medication?

If treatment is approved, the specialist clinic sends your private prescription to Thame Pharmacy. We will contact you to arrange payment and collection. Current regulations mean medical cannabis prescriptions must be collected in person from the dispensing pharmacy.
