Frequently asked questions
Period Delay Service
What is the period delay service?
Our period delay service allows you to postpone your period for a short time using prescription tablets supplied after a consultation with our pharmacist. It is ideal for holidays, events or occasions where you would prefer not to have your period.
How do period delay tablets work?
The medication, often norethisterone, works by keeping progesterone levels higher so that your period does not start. When you stop taking the tablets, your period usually begins again within a few days.
Who can use period delay medication?
Period delay tablets are usually suitable for women aged 18 and over who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and who do not have certain medical conditions, such as a history of blood clots or serious liver disease. Our pharmacist will check your medical history to make sure the service is right for you.
How do I take the tablets?
You usually start the tablets three days before your period is due and continue taking them each day for as long as you want to delay your period, up to the maximum number of days advised by the pharmacist. Your period should return within a few days of stopping the tablets.
Are period delay tablets safe and are they a contraceptive?
Period delay tablets are generally safe for short-term use when taken as directed, but they can cause side effects such as bloating, breast tenderness, headaches or spotting. They do not act as contraception, so you will still need to use suitable birth control to prevent pregnancy.
