This service is appointment based. Please bring details of any medicines you take and, if available, recent blood pressure and weight readings plus any previous contraception history. If you are not suitable for the service, we will explain why and refer you to an appropriate provider. All consultations are carried out in a private room and your information is kept strictly confidential.

You will have a private consultation with a pharmacist who will review your health, discuss pill options and, if appropriate, supply contraception with clear guidance on how to use it.

Who is eligible for this service?
This NHS service is available from your first period (menarche) up to age 49 for the combined pill and up to age 54 for the progestogen-only pill, for those wishing to start, restart or continue the contraceptive pill, subject to eligibility checks.
Is the service free?
Yes. This is a free NHS service, so there is no charge for the consultation or for the contraceptive pill if you are eligible.
Do I need to see my GP first?
No GP referral is required. You can book directly with Thame Pharmacy to start, restart or continue your contraceptive pill.
What happens during the consultation?
You will speak with a trained pharmacist in a private consultation room. They will review your medical history, check your suitability for the pill and, if appropriate, supply contraception and provide clear advice on how to use it.
How long does the appointment take?
Appointments to start or restart the pill can take up to 30 minutes. Repeat supplies and reviews are usually around 10 to 15 minutes.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Please bring details of any medicines you are taking and, if available, recent blood pressure and weight measurements plus any previous contraception history.
Can I switch from my GP prescription to this service?
Yes. If you are eligible, Thame Pharmacy can take over supplying your pill without needing a separate GP appointment.
What if I’m not suitable for this service?
If you are not eligible or the service is not suitable for your needs, we will explain the reasons and signpost or refer you to an appropriate healthcare provider.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. All consultations are carried out in a private room and your information is handled in line with strict professional and NHS confidentiality standards.
Can I walk in, or do I have to book?
This contraception service is appointment based, so please book in advance to secure a time that suits you.
