Frequently asked questions

Pneumonia Vaccine

What is pneumonia and why is vaccination important?

Pneumonia is a lung infection that can cause fever, cough, chest pain and breathing difficulties. It can be especially serious in older adults and people with long-term health conditions. Vaccination is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of pneumococcal pneumonia and related complications.

What pneumonia vaccine do you use?

At Thame Pharmacy, we offer the Pneumovax 23 pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV), which helps protect against 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria that can cause pneumonia and other serious infections.

Who can have the pneumonia vaccine?

The private pneumonia vaccine service is available for adults aged 18 and over. It is particularly recommended for people aged 65 and above and for adults with certain long-term health conditions that increase their risk of serious pneumococcal infection.

How many doses are needed and do I need a booster?

Most people only need a single dose of Pneumovax 23. A booster is not usually required unless you are at particularly high risk of pneumococcal infection, in which case your healthcare professional will advise you if another dose is needed in the future.

Are there any side effects to the pneumonia vaccine?

Most side effects are mild and short-lived. You may notice redness, swelling or tenderness where the injection was given, and some people experience a mild fever or feeling unwell for a day or two after vaccination.
