Frequently asked questions

MMR Vaccine

What age do you have the MMR vaccine?

Children usually receive two MMR doses in childhood, with the first given in the second year of life and a booster dose a few years later. At Thame Pharmacy, we can vaccinate from 2 years of age for those who have missed doses or need protection, including for travel or study.

Are there side effects of the MMR vaccine?

Side effects are generally mild and short-lived. Some people may experience a fever, mild rash or temporary joint aches after the injection. Serious reactions are extremely rare and your vaccinating pharmacist is trained to deal with them.

How long does the MMR vaccine last?

For most people, completing the two-dose MMR course gives long-lasting, usually lifelong, protection against measles, mumps and rubella.

Can adults have the MMR vaccine?

Yes. Adults who have not been fully vaccinated, or who are unsure of their vaccination status, can receive the MMR vaccine. It is especially important for students, healthcare workers and travellers, as well as anyone during local outbreaks.

What is the MMR vaccine used for?

The MMR vaccine is used to protect against measles, mumps and rubella – three highly contagious viral infections that can lead to serious complications, particularly in adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.
