Caring for a Child with Chickenpox

Chicken Pox

Caring for a child with chickenpox can be challenging, but with the right knowledge and support, you can make the process smoother for both you and your child.

Managing Symptoms
  • Relieve itching with calamine lotion, antihistamines, or cool oatmeal baths

  • Apply a cold compress to particularly itchy areas

  • Control fever using paracetamol. Avoid ibuprofen unless advised by a doctor

  • Encourage hydration with plenty of fluids such as water or clear broths

Preventing Scratching
  • Keep your child’s nails trimmed short

  • Use mittens or socks over their hands at night

  • Offer distractions such as reading, colouring, or puzzles

Monitoring for Complications

Most cases resolve without complications. Seek medical advice if you notice any of the following:

  • Blisters that become red, swollen, or filled with pus

  • A fever that persists for more than a few days

  • Difficulty breathing or unusual fatigue

Creating a Comfortable Environment
  • Keep the room cool and well ventilated

  • Dress your child in loose, breathable clothing

  • Encourage plenty of rest and quiet activities to support recovery
