Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It primarily affects children but can also occur in adults who have not been previously infected or vaccinated. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the fluid from chickenpox blisters. The characteristic symptom of chickenpox is the appearance of itchy red spots or blisters on the skin, which can cover the entire body. These lesions go through different stages, starting as small red bumps that progress to fluid-filled blisters, then crust over and eventually heal. Other common symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, and loss of appetite. Chickenpox is usually a self-limiting illness, but in some cases, especially in older individuals or those with weakened immune systems, complications such as bacterial infections, pneumonia, or encephalitis can occur. Vaccination is an effective preventive measure against chickenpox. The varicella vaccine is recommended for individuals who have not had chickenpox or received the vaccine in childhood. It provides long-lasting immunity and significantly reduces the risk of contracting the disease.
